good appetizer before a grandiose meal. The legacy left by the Europeans
and the heritage of the Indian cultures play beautifully together and
will present the first-time visitor to the Andean region with an
unexpected surprise. The main meal is, of course, the Galapagos Islands.
Cruising the archipelago is a wonderful treat, a new perspective on
Mother Nature and a valuable lesson on how animals and humans can share
a space without fearing each other.

Day 2, Quito : Colonial art at its best
Free morning to start exploring the city on your own. In the
afternoon our guide will pick you up at your hotel and escort you on
a comprehensive visit of Quito.
First we will take a brief stop to admire the Parliament Building
and its facade where a fabulous stone mural depicts the history of
Ecuador. Then we continue to the recently revamped colonial
district, the largest and most beautiful in Latin America. The old
quarter is a rich mixture of architectural styles and decorative
arts that transports visitors back to the time of the colonies. In
the company of our knowledgeable guide we stroll around the quarter,
learning about the fascinating history of Ecuador, admiring the rich
colonial architecture and paying visits to the cathedral and two of
the best representatives of Baroque art in the Americas: La Compañia
Church and the Monastery of San Francisco. At the end of the tour we
will drive up to the Panecillo Hill for a spectacular view of the
city. This tour may be shared with other passengers. (B)
